Walk 3b Route map

Circular walk, 1¾ to 2 hours. About 4¼ miles.

There are steep steps up the embankment behind the White Hart.

Start: Great Yeldham Village Green.

Go along North Road. Turn left into Duncan Rise, follow the bend to the right. At the end of the road is a footpath.

Go right, downhill a short way to the next junction and go left with the school grounds on your left and a hedge on the right.

Keep ahead between two fences across the garden of The Change House, down and up a steep dip and on into Gravel Pit Field. Continue ahead with the hedge on your right until you meet a farm track from the left.

Go left up the unmade farm track with arable land on each side to the top of the hill.

At the top of the hill go ahead to the field entrance at the Ridgewell Road and go left. Follow the path where it diverges briefly from the road to run along the top of the bank. There are numerous butterflies here in summer on the wild flowers.

Where the path rejoins the road, cross the road and go right for a short distance away from the village.

Go left down a narrow path between fences. Go ahead over a bridge and across a field with a fence on your left to a gap on the far side.

Go left along the track of the adandoned railway line to where it slopes down on the site of a removed bridge.

Go right and along a concrete farm road past a farm building on your right.

At the far side of the field go left and up the hill with the hedge on your right. You will pass the end of the grass landing strip on your left.

Go through the gap at the top of the field, and turn left towards the village.

Go ahead with the hedge on your left, though a gap into the next field.

Go right along the field margin and keep ahead into a narrow spinney along the top of the Sports Ground. This path runs behind the Scout Hut and the Pavillion.

At the far side go left and right onto the private concrete access road and go ahead to the Toppesfield Road.

Go left until you are opposite the site of the Railway Station and go right beside the abandoned embankment.

Go left up a flight of steps to the top of the embankment and down the other side into the garden of the White Hart.

Keep ahead across the lawn to the picket fence by the main road. Go through a small gate in the fence and cross the road.

Go left along the road, then go right into Spayne's Hall drive. Keep straight along the drive to the top where it bends right and then left. Go through the kissing gate beside the main gate and continue ahead along a farm road with hedges on both sides into the next field.

Go ahead through into the next field. Continue with the hedge on your left as it turns right, left and right again, to the far side of the field. Go left across a footbridge and follow the path as it immediately goes through a gap on the right from the field side of the hedge to the inside of an overgrown green lane. Follow the path between the trees to Leather Lane. Go left down the road to the Village Green.
