Walk 2a Route map

Circular walk, 1¾ to 2 hours. About 4¼ miles.

There is one flight of steps off the High Street (which can be avoided).

This walk includes two lengths of temporary permissive paths with the consent of Gray and Dale Farms.

Start: Great Yeldham Village Green.

Go along Bridge Street, over the bridge, go left of the small triangular green to the High Street.

Just opposite to the Police Station cross the main road.

Go up the concrete steps just to the left of the Police Station, follow the path behind the houses. (To avoid the steps go to the top right side of Whitlock Drive, and go through the gap on the right).

At the end of the houses ignore the junction with an unofficial path along the old railway line on the left and go foreward along a narrow uncultivated strip across a field. This is Smith's Field, Great Yeldham Hall.

At the far side of the field ignore the junction with the path on the left which leads to the Sports Ground, go foreward with the hedge and ditch on your right.

This is Brickyard Field, Great Yeldham Hall.

Go right through a gap in the hedge then keep left and continue across Smith's Field with the hedge on your left past the end of the grass landing strip.

At the far side of the field go right along a concrete farm road and pass a farm implement shed on your left.

Go ahead to a gap in the embankment of the abandoned railway where the bridge has been removed. Go left up onto the embankment and continue until you see a gap on your right leading to path across a field. There is a sign informing you that keeping ahead beyond this point the track is a private.

Go through the gap on your right. And keep ahead across the end of a narrow field with a fence on your right.

Go ahead aross a footbridge and along a narrow path with fences on each side.

At the Ridgewell Road go right beside the road for a short distance before crossing over level with the end of the path opposite.

Having crossed the road go left away from the village along the path, which diverts up the bank beside an earlier road widening. In summer the wild flowers here attract numerous butterflies.

Go right up into the next field entrance between the house and portable building and go ahead along the dirt farm track down the hill to the spinney at the bottom of the hill.

Go right a short way, then left through a gap in the hedge, cross a bridge and then a boardwalk to emerge in Pound Field. Be careful to avoid disturbing fishermen at the nearby lake.

Go left with the hedge on your left, then go right up a narrow uncultivated strip to the far side of the field.

Go ahead through a gap in the hedge, over a wooden bridge and turn right into Tilbury Hall Chase.

At the top of Tilbury Hall Chase, cross the road, and turn right towards Great Yeldham.

From the Great Yeldham road go left along an unmade-up track between two houses into a field, and turn left along the the top side of the field, for a short distance before turning right down a narrow uncultivated strip all the way across the field.

At the bottom of the field go right, continuing ahead along the permissive path to Mill Lane.

Go left past two houses on your right, then go right.

Continue along the bottom of the field with the boundary on your right.

At the far corner go left and up the side of the field to the top corner. Follow the path ahead between the houses and down some steps into Leather Lane.

Go right down the pavement to the Village Green.
