Fleam Dyke, Cambs. An ancient defensive barrier across the chalk from Balsham to the edge of the Fens at Fulbourn.
A public footpath runs along the top with access at all times from each end and from a lay-by on the A11.

The A11 road divides Fulbourn on the west side from Balsham to the east.

6 April 2011. In the wooded section towards Balsham, 1 Holly Blue.

17 April 2011. Walked from Balsham end. Numerous Brimstones and Orange Tips.

19 April 2011. Walked from Balsham. Numerous Brimstones and Orange Tips.

21 April 2011. Walked from Balsham. Numerous Brimstones, numerous Orange Tips, 3 Green Hairsteaks near Mutlow Hill, 1 Peacock.

3 July 2011. 5 Dark Green Fritillaries.

23 July 2011. Mid to late morning, bright intervals, windy. 5 Chalkhill Blues, 1 Dark Green Fritillary, few Gatekeepers, few Meadow Browns.

3 Sept 2011. Sunny, windy. c. 7 Chalkhill Blues, all very worn, one blue female, none appeared to be male. 1 Brimstone, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Meadow Brown, 2 Small Heath.


11 March 2012. West side near Mutlow Hill, TL 544544 - 1 Brimstone. East side, near A11, TL 549540 - 1 Peacock.

22 March 2012. Between Dungate Farm and Bedford Gap, TL556533, 1 Brimstone.

25 March 2012. Near Mutlow Hill. TL5454. 1 Red Admiral.

29 March 2012. TL549541, 1 Peacock, 1 Brimstone. TL 547541, 1 Brimstone; TL545544, 2 Brimstones, 1 Red Admiral.

30 April 2012. Mutlow Hill to Railway cutting: TL547544, 1 Green veined White, 1 Brimstone, 2 Peacocks, 1 Red Admiral. TL547545, 2 Brimstones. A11 lay-by: TL550542, 1 Comma.

15 July 2012. A11 to Bedford Gap. Breezy, not very bright. 6 Meadow Browns, 15 Ringlets.

12 Aug 2012. TL5553. Between A11 and Bedford Gap. 2 Small Whites, 4 Brimstones, c.180 Chalk Hill Blues, 4 Peacocks, 4 Gatekeepers, 5 Meadow Browns, 1 Ringlet. Note: counted just before 10.00 am, as it got warmer there seemed to be about twice as many CHBs walking back but not recounted.

13 Sept 2012. East side. 6 Small Whites, 2 Chalkhill Blues (1M, 1F), 1 Red Admiral, 2 Small Heaths.

13 Sept 2012. Fleam Dyke, West side. TL 5454. 2 Small Whites, 1 Brimstone, 1 Green-veined White, 2 Red Admirals, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Commas, 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Small Heath.


14 April 2013. TL5454. Sunny but windy. West side between the A11 and the railway cutting, 4 Brimstones. East side near the road, 1 Brimstone.

20 April 2013. Bright, breezy, cool. East side. Balsham end to Bedford Gap, 1 Brimstone, 1 Peacock. Bedford Gap to A11, 3 Brimstones, 2 Small Tortoiseshells, 2 Peacocks. West side from A11 to the railway cutting. 1 Green-veined White, 6 Brimstones, 3 Peacocks.

5 May 2013. Sunny, light breeze. East side. Balsham end to Bedford Gap, 3 Brimstones, 1 Orange-tip. Bedford Gap to A11, 9 Brimstones, 2 Green-veined Whites, 1 Orange-tip, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Peacock. West side, A11 to the railway cutting, 14 Brimstones, 2 Green-veined Whites, 4 Orange-tips, 4 Holly Blues, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Peacock, 1 Comma.

25 June 2013. Bright intervals, breezy. 6 Brimstones, 1 Painted Lady, 6 Small Heaths.

26 July 2016. East side. A11 to Bedford Gap. Breezy. Many smallish Skippers, 2 Brimstones, very many Chalkhill Blues, 3 pairs in cop., 1 Marbled White, many Gatekeepers, some Meadow Browns and Ringlets.
